Need some va va voom in the garden? Look no further than this recently introduced 'False Indigo' cultivar from North America, which sports chunky spikes of eye-catching, lemon-yellow pea-like flowers that open gradually from smoky purple buds up the stem. This complementary colour combination is very striking, highlighted further by mounds of delicate blue-green foliage.
Flowering from late spring into early summer, once the blooms fade its value continues with the production of dark seed pods — an unusual addition to the autumn garden. Use its intense hue to refresh and lift more sombre colours, or showcase it with cool whites and apple greens. A great choice for a sunny, free-draining border; make room for it in your cutting garden too, as the blooms last well in water. Butterflies love it.
