A pretty cultivar with flowers that emerge pale lemon and age to pink on tall racemes above glaucous blue, tri-lobed foliage. The flowers are followed in September by large seed pods.
Happiest in poor, free-draining soil in full sun — avoid rich clay or improved soil. Neutral to acidic conditions are preferred. The clump can take up to three years to mature and sends down a long tap root, making it drought tolerant once established. Avoid root disturbance. Branched stems rarely require staking unless grown in nutrient-rich soil.
The bicoloured flowers give a long season of interest from May to August and are a particular favourite of butterflies. A clump-forming, deciduous perennial and a great addition to a sunny mixed border, large containers, or as an elegant cut flower.
Note: avoid planting near black walnut (Juglans nigra) — chemicals from the roots will cause Baptisia to struggle.
