Baptisia 'Solar Flare'

Baptisia ‘Solar Flare’ is a striking False Indigo with a colour show unlike any other in the genus. In spring, purplish stems emerge before the spikes of pea-like flowers open vivid golden yellow, gradually deepening through orange to maroon as they age — a rich, multi-tonal effect that lasts from late spring through midsummer.

After flowering, the distinctive inflated seed pods for which Baptisia is known develop and persist through winter, adding structure to the garden and providing food for birds. Resist the urge to cut them down. Upright and clump-forming, ‘Solar Flare’ performs best in well-drained soil in a sunny site and, once established, is long-lived and low maintenance.
