Baptisia 'Vanilla Cream' (Decadence Series)

Ever so pretty and unashamedly romantic, Baptisia ‘Vanilla Cream’ (Decadence Series) is a False Indigo with real presence. In spring, the emerging foliage has a beautiful bronze cast before maturing to grey-green, forming a well-branched, rounded clump. From late spring into midsummer, spikes of pastel yellow buds open to creamy vanilla-coloured, pea-like flowers — a gentle, refreshing colour that lifts darker tones of purple, pink and blue in the garden and sings out against greens and zesty limes.

Baptisia have rightly gained in popularity with gardeners, and ‘Vanilla Cream’ is a perfect choice for an informal cottage garden — though its elegant looks hold their own equally well in contemporary and courtyard planting schemes. Seed pods develop after flowering and deepen in colour through autumn. It thrives in full sun in free-draining soil, where it can develop the deep tap roots that make it long-lived and drought tolerant. Bees and other pollinators love it.
