Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
Fiery red flower spikes rise in midsummer just above the bright green foliage, appearing in remarkable numbers and creating a vivid, concentrated mass of colour that lasts well into autumn. The large, pointed leaves develop dramatic burgundy-purple mottling and red margins as the season progresses — a second season of interest that sets ‘JS Caliente’ apart from most other Bistortas.
Bred by Jan Spruyt in Belgium, this cultivar has a naturally uniform, compact habit that makes it particularly well suited to group planting. It thrives in sun or partial shade with moisture-retentive soil — ideal alongside streams, ponds and in boggy situations. A perfect choice for hot-coloured borders, or for lifting a shaded area with a burst of vivid colour.
Synonym: Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘JS Caliente’

Care Guide:
Plant in moist, fertile soil enriched with organic matter, in full sun or partial shade. Tolerates heavier soils well and is reliably hardy. Mulching annually will help maintain soil fertility and moisture retention. Once established, spreads steadily to form effective weed-suppressing ground cover. Cut back after flowering or in late winter or spring before new growth begins. Divide clumps in autumn or spring to control spread and keep plants vigorous or to propagate.
