Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
Dense, fat spikes of soft lilac-pink flowers rise above strongly veined, finely pointed oval leaves from summer through to autumn — a long-lasting and free-flowering display that is a magnet for pollinators. ‘Superba’ is a vigorous, clump-forming perennial and one of the finest selections of Bistorta officinalis, a species native to Great Britain and widely distributed across Europe and Asia.
It thrives in moisture-retentive soil in sun or partial shade — ideal for waterside planting, bog gardens, pond edges and stream sides. It spreads more readily in sunny situations and less so in dry shade, but remains well-behaved enough for smaller gardens and the front of a border. Remove faded flower spikes to keep the plant tidy.
