Commonly known as Feather Reed Grass, Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is a clump-forming grass valued for the strong vertical lines it brings to the garden. Linear green foliage arches from tall, erect stems, with bronze-purple flower heads appearing in late summer before fading to warm buff. Through winter, the frosted seedheads continue to earn their place, catching the light and adding structure long after other plants have died back.
Adaptable and easy to grow, it is happy in poor, moist, well-drained or humus-rich soils in sun or partial shade. Cut back hard in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
