Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Overdam' is an easy-to-grow ornamental grass with distinct cream margins and fine pale stripes along its leaves. Upright in habit, its stems are topped in summer with dramatic feathery plumes of small, smoky-purple flowers that fade to buff in autumn. Resist the temptation to cut it back in autumn — it will stay upright through winter and looks beautiful dusted with frost.
Tough and hardy, it prefers full sun or light shade in free-draining soil, though in moister conditions it can reach 2m. Extremely versatile, it makes a stunning statement grass planted alone or en masse, adding movement and sound to borders, prairie-style schemes or a large container on the terrace.
