Sold under the trade name Sunshine Blue, 'Jason' PBR is a compact, bushy deciduous cultivar of Caryopteris incana, a species native to China and Japan. It is grown for its striking combination of bright golden-yellow aromatic foliage and fluffy clusters of deep amethyst-blue flowers in late summer and early autumn. Both the leaves and flowers are fragrant, and the blooms are a magnet for bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
The golden foliage holds its colour well through the heat of summer, making this a valuable plant for year-round interest. It is best grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot — ideal against a warm wall. It has good drought tolerance once established but will not tolerate wet or poorly drained conditions. Prune back hard in early spring each year to promote vigorous new growth; flowering is unaffected as blooms are produced on new wood.
