Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
Commonly known as White Turtlehead, Chelone glabra has clusters of large, two-lipped white to cream flowers that resemble a turtle's head — hence the name. Toothed, lance-shaped, dark green leaves cover its upright stems.
Perfect for naturalistic planting schemes, it flowers from late summer into early autumn and can grow in partial shade or sun in any reasonable, fairly moist soil. The attractive seedheads can be left to provide additional winter interest.
Caution: the seeds can be an irritant — avoid direct contact.
