Crocus species ‘Tricolour’ is one of the most eye-catching of the early spring crocuses. Its large, fragrant flowers are a beautifully layered combination: pale mauve inner, deeper mauve outer, and a golden-yellow throat edged with a distinctive white zone — the three tones that give it its name. It opens with the leaves in late winter, flowering from February to March and bringing colour to the garden at one of the quietest times of year.
Plant from September to December, 5cm deep in any well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Scatter the corms before planting for a natural, informal effect in grass, or plant in clumps in borders or containers. Once established, it will naturalise readily, returning reliably year after year.
