Hailing from Mexico, Cuphea 'David Verity' is, in hotter climates, a year-round producer of nectar-rich flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. In the UK it is an evergreen tender perennial that can be grown in a container or planted outside as an annual.

A US garden hybrid with a compact branching habit, it bears 2cm long orange-red tubular flowers on deep red stems with mid-green, lance-shaped foliage, flowering from summer through to the first frosts.

Give it full sun and well-drained soil of any pH. If grown in a container it can be moved to a bright, frost-free site to overwinter — a conservatory would be ideal. Prune in spring if necessary to maintain shape.

Its exotic appearance makes it ideal for jungle or tropical-style gardens, as well as city, courtyard, coastal and cottage garden schemes. Its ability to thrive in heat makes it particularly well suited to planting in front of south-facing walls or fences.
