'Bishop of Llandaff' produces masses of eye-popping single scarlet flowers over bushy, dark bronze, almost black foliage from mid-summer into autumn. One of the most loved and best-performing dahlias around, it is equally popular with bees, which love its nectar- and pollen-rich flowers.
A great cut flower, it really packs a punch in a hot border, delivering colour into autumn with regular deadheading. In informal planting schemes it contrasts beautifully with airy plants such as Verbena bonariensis. It thrives in full sun in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. In colder areas, lift, dry, and store tubers frost-free once autumn frosts have blackened the foliage. In milder areas, tubers can be left in the ground with the crown protected by a mulch.
