Dahlia merckii produces masses of small, single, lavender-pink flowers with gold-rimmed centres that dance on wiry red stems above divided green foliage. Hailing from Mexico, it is a bee magnet and will flower from mid-summer until the hard autumn frosts.
Undeniably pretty, especially when combined in a border with larger-flowerhead plants such as roses, this species dahlia is actually hardier than most. Keep deadheading and do not let it dry out completely. It performs best in light, moist but well-drained soil in full or partial sun. In colder areas or on heavy soils, lift and store tubers frost-free over winter.
