Pollinator Friendly

A tough, hardy herbaceous perennial that packs a real punch. Echinacea ‘JS Engeltje’ has the typical cone-shaped centre with slightly reflexed petals of white that intensify to deep pink where they meet the central cone, and carries a light fragrance — making it a particularly lovely choice for a patio container near the house. Sturdy stems grow to 90cm with no tendency to flop, and the plant flowers continuously from July to November — perfect for cutting gardens. Bees and butterflies love the flowers, and this versatile plant suits coastal, prairie and cottage gardens as well as large containers. Best in full sun but tolerant of semi-shade, with no specific pH requirements; give it fertile, well-drained soil.

Plant Notes

  • Care Guide

    Plant in full sun in well-drained, reasonably fertile soil. Space generously — Echinacea dislikes overcrowding and resents competition from neighbours. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and largely trouble-free. Deadhead regularly throughout the growing season to encourage further flowers. Leave the final seed heads of the season standing through winter; they provide architectural interest and are a valuable food source for birds. Cut back to 5cm from ground level in late winter as new growth appears. Divide approximately every four years in autumn or spring, but leave undisturbed while the plant looks healthy and vigorous.

  • Good to Know

    Wildlife-friendly — the flowers are a rich nectar source for bees and butterflies, and the seed heads attract goldfinches and other seed-eating birds through autumn and winter.

    Long-lived and rewarding once established in the right conditions — good drainage and full sun are key.

    Some varieties are lightly scented — worth seeking out on a warm day.
