Epimedium grandiflorum 'Lilafee'

Epimedium grandiflorum 'Lilafee' — commonly known as barrenwort and whose cultivar name translates from the German as 'Lilac Fairy' — is a compact, clump-forming perennial that brings quiet charm to shaded corners of the garden. In mid-spring, open sprays of 2.5cm wide purple flowers with characteristically long, pale spurs appear just as the new leaves emerge, the young foliage flushed with attractive purple tints that complement the blooms perfectly.

Deciduous and reliably hardy, 'Lilafee' is an excellent choice for shaded areas including dry shade beneath trees and shrubs where few plants will thrive. The foliage takes on warm autumnal tones as the season closes, extending its season of interest well into winter. Best in humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial or full shade.
