Eryngium bourgatii 'Lapis Blue'

A very striking form of sea holly, snowflake-like prickly bracts surround  bold blue cones, which standout above the prickly green and white foliage.  Initially steely blue in colour when they open in mid summer, the flower heads mature to deep blue before fading to buff.

Showcase this striking perennial in your gravel or dry garden, allowing its architectural form to do the talking or combine it with Erigeron karvinskianus, Scabiosa and Stachys for a contrast in textures within your border.  Much beloved by bees and other pollinators, you can cut back the faded flowers to encourage further blooming but if left they will stay upright into winter and look amazing kissed by frost; plus be a useful food source for the birds.  Thriving in a free draining and even poor soil in full sun, they are a popular stalwart of the coastal garden.
