Eryngium × olivierianum ‘Big Blue’ is an upright, clump-forming Sea Holly with spiky, highly divided silvery-green foliage. The stiff, branched stems are topped with blue, cone-shaped flower heads surrounded by a ruff of prickly silvery-blue bracts — and ‘Big Blue’ is rightly named for the exceptional intensity of its colouring. It holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Excellent for the middle of a herbaceous or mixed border in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun, it is also a superb cut flower — and equally good dried — continuing to provide a structural focal point long after the flowers have faded. Drought tolerant once established, it thrives in gravel gardens too.
