Eryngium × olivierianum 'Jos Eijking'

This wonderful sea holly, often known as 'Sapphire Blue' is a product of the cut flower trade and produces good large electric blue thistle flowers in mid summer.

It makes a very good middle of the border plant in any good soil and full sun. Even when the flowers have finished the remaining dry seedheads look very structural in the border. They make good leaf clumps to about 30cm high with the flowers held on strong stems which also turn to an electric blue, adding to the striking effect in a border.
