Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
Architectural and evergreen, Euphorbia characias creates bold clumps of brush-like stems with narrow glaucous foliage and chunky clusters of lime-green bracts that appear in spring. Self-seeded offspring are normally welcome, as the parent plants can be short-lived.
Being evergreen, it provides strong year-round structure in the garden, coming into its own in spring when the vibrant lime-green colour really sings out. Hailing from the Mediterranean, it prefers a very sunny spot in light, free-draining soil and suits gravel gardens as well as more formal settings. Easy to grow and low maintenance — wear gloves to prune flowered stems down to ground level in September.
H3 — hardy in mild areas of the UK (-5°C to -10°C). May need protection in colder regions.
The sap is a harmful irritant to skin and eyes.
