Eurybia × herveyi is one of those plants that every gardener should know about. Between August and September it produces masses of starry, deep lavender-blue, nectar-rich daisy flowers on branching, wiry stems, each studded with a yellow centre. Highly sought after by butterflies, bees, and other pollinators — once pollinated, the centres turn red.
Apart from the rich floral display, the best thing about this reliable, hardy perennial is that it thrives in dappled or partial shade in fertile, free-draining soil — challenging growing conditions that gardeners are often asked to find plants for. Tolerant of more sun too, it combines beautifully with Nepeta govaniana and ornamental grasses such as Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea 'Heidebraut'.
Height × Spread: 100cm × 50cm
Synonym: Aster macrophyllus 'Twilight'.
