Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
Elegant, slender spikes of violet-blue, pea-like flowers gently weave above fresh lime-green foliage in summer. Galega orientalis resembles a more naturalistic cousin of the lupin and suits informal planting schemes beautifully.
It combines well with ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or meadow planting, adding gentle, slightly random vertical punctuation. Grown as an agricultural fodder crop in many Baltic countries, it also helps to fix nitrogen in the soil — and bees love it too. It may wander around the garden, popping up unexpectedly, but can easily be kept in check. Hardy and unfussy, it grows in most soils except very wet, in sun or partial shade.
