Commonly known as Bowman's Root, Gillenia trifoliata produces delicate, pure white starry flowers that flutter like butterflies on tall red stems with mid-green leaves. An added bonus is the fiery red colour its foliage turns in autumn. A magnet for bees and butterflies.
This captivating plant is much sought after for its ability to bring lightness and elegance to a partially shaded border. It looks equally at home in a naturalistic woodland scheme and cuts well for arrangements. It performs best in rich, neutral to slightly acidic, free-draining soil that retains some moisture. It prefers partial shade, but can cope with more sun as long as it is shaded during the warmest part of the day.
