Commonly known as Alpine Catchfly, Heliosperma alpestre is an alpine form of Campion producing a haze of single, white, starry flowers on compact stems over an ankle-high sprawling hummock of deep green leaves. Very prolific and long-flowering, it blooms in early summer and is evergreen.
Tough and hardy, it loves a challenge, growing in places other plants avoid — tight crevices in walls or between rocks — and makes an excellent choice for a coastal garden too. Bees love it. It thrives in gritty, free-draining soil that retains some moisture and does not dry out completely, in full sun or light shade.
Synonym: Silene alpestris.
