Heuchera 'Obsidian', commonly known as Alum Root, has glossy, lobed leaves of deep purple, almost black. It forms a low, clump-shaped mound of foliage, with sprays of small cream flowers appearing in summer.
A great plant for the front of a border or for underplanting trees and shrubs, it also works well in containers, where its strikingly dark leaves create the perfect contrast for plants with pale foliage or flowers. Heuchera are happy in sun or partial shade in any reasonably good soil — avoid very hot, exposed spots as the leaves can scorch in intense sun.
