Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
Large, flattish clusters of pale pinkish-green buds open to small, pale pink flowers that deepen to dark pink and red as they mature, held on sturdy grey-green stems with gently toothed leaves. 'Herbstfreude' is an iconic cottage garden plant with an RHS Award of Garden Merit, and its popularity is well-deserved — the display evolves continuously from late summer through to winter.
The nectar-rich flowers, produced from August to October, are particularly attractive to bees and deliver outstanding late-season colour. Even after fading to dark brown, the seedheads continue to earn their place in the garden, looking beautiful highlighted by frost. Easy to grow and drought tolerant; it needs well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun. If your soil is too rich, it grows well in containers.
