A plant with real character, Inula hookeri — Hooker's Inula — produces a generous succession of soft, lemon-yellow daisy flowers through mid to late summer, their finely rayed petals giving them an almost feathery, dishevelled charm. Bees and hoverflies find them irresistible, and the flowers are followed by fluffy seed heads that carry interest well into autumn.
This is a plant that earns its place in a difficult spot. It thrives in moist, fertile soil and partial shade, making it an excellent choice for a damp corner, a bog garden, or the shadier reaches of a wildlife border. It will tolerate clay and grows well in chalk, loam, and sandy soils too.
A word of warning: Inula hookeri can spread vigorously once established, so choose its position with care and give it room to roam — or be prepared to divide it regularly. In the right place, that vigour is a virtue.
It combines well with Ligularia, Persicaria, Rodgersia, and moisture-loving ferns.
