Iris lactea is an elegant species comprising delicate standards that range in colour from palest purplish-blue to milky white, with falls that are always white with a fine tracing of violet or blue. These are held on upright stems above clumps of pale grey-green, strappy foliage.
Its daintiness belies its toughness. Hardy and adaptable, it can cope with a range of soils including clay and coastal soils containing salt, as long as they remain moist, but performs best in sun or partial shade. A good choice for a bog garden, it would also look very pretty planted in large drifts within a water meadow, adding colour and grace through early summer.
