Native to north-east Turkey and Georgia, Iris lazica is a tidy evergreen, clump-forming rhizomatous perennial that flowers from February to April, giving a much-needed boost of intense colour to the garden. The flowers are up to 8cm wide; the base of the falls is white with blue veining, while the rest of the petals are rich purple or lavender-blue. Flowers can be cut when in bud and brought into the house to enjoy as they unfurl.

Happiest in dappled shade and neutral to alkaline, moist but well-drained soil. Ideal for planting in front of a warm wall or in a sheltered spot with a little shade and a leafy soil. Unlike its close relative Iris unguicularis, it dislikes being baked by the sun. Cut back spent flower stems and remove dying leaves as they appear. Established clumps can be divided from mid-summer into autumn.
