Bang on trend for rusty reds and browns, Iris 'Quechee' offers a rich colour combination of mahogany falls, each highlighted with a golden yellow beard, twinned with slightly paler, ruffled upright standards. Its nectar-rich flowers are deliciously scented too, with a hint of chocolate orange.
Flowering from May to June, plant it in drifts through a sunny gravel or cottage garden, where it looks stunning combined with other jewel colours such as oranges, yellows, blues and pale pinks. Once the flowers fade, the bold, sword-like foliage remains into autumn, adding useful structure and leaf contrast. Like many bearded irises, it thrives in a very sunny spot in free-draining soil.
