'Sable' has beautiful scented flowers with deep purple falls and purple standards, appearing on erect stems in summer. The large, sword-shaped foliage is grey-green.
Plant in a sunny position in well-drained soil and it will thrive. It is also tolerant of salt spray, making it a good choice for coastal gardens. When the rhizomes become congested, lift and divide after flowering between midsummer and early autumn, discarding any old or rotten material and replanting the remainder to allow re-establishment before winter.
