This red-hot poker really sings out in the summer border, and has been turning heads at the nursery all season. Dense, torch-like spikes of tubular flowers appear from summer into early autumn, the buds opening fiery reddish-orange and tipping to yellow as they mature, with protruding stamens that add to the drama — equally striking in an exotic or tropical-style planting as in a traditional herbaceous border.
A basal clump of long, strap-like leaves provides useful structure at ground level, acting as a handsome foil for spring plants before the flower spikes shoot up from the base.
Native to Africa, Kniphofia are tougher than they look. 'Alcazar' is reliably hardy throughout most of the UK, even in severe winters. Plant in moist but well-drained soil — it dislikes sitting wet over winter, so avoid heavy ground that holds water. Full sun brings out the best of those fiery colours.
