Kniphofia caulescens — the caulescent red hot poker — is a South African native with a bold, architectural presence. Grey-green leaves form an evergreen clump, and in summer tubular flowers open orange before fading to yellow, creating that characteristic two-tone torch effect.
Plant in the middle of a sunny border in well-drained soil. Red hot pokers are invaluable for hot-coloured planting schemes and for adding strong structural interest, and this species is particularly well suited to coastal and gravel gardens where its drought tolerance comes into its own.
