Commonly known as Winged Loosestrife, Lythrum alatum is a pretty North American perennial with upright, square stems with slightly winged angles. The opposing leaves are lanceolate, and pinky-purple flowers spiral up the inflorescence from May through to September. Unlike its cousin Lythrum salicaria, it sets viable seed but is not invasive.
It thrives in moist or wet conditions in full sun and dislikes acidic soil, making it ideal for pondside and bog gardens or any sunny area that stays consistently moist. In the USA it is pollinated by hummingbirds; in the UK it is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Deer show little interest. It also makes a good cut flower, as the stems remain erect in all but the harshest conditions.
