Orchid-like, cream-coloured flowers with magenta lower lips emerge from leaf junctions in early summer on Melittis melissophyllum 'Royal Velvet Distinction'. Its dark green, deliciously honey-scented leaves are held on short, sturdy stems.
This versatile perennial is great for planting along a woodland path or in drifts weaving through the front of an informal, shady border. Designers often use it for robust but attractive mass planting. A great cut flower, it is also a magnet for bees and butterflies. It grows best in reasonably moist soil in a partially shaded location, but can tolerate some sun.
