Large, feathery, dark red plumes produced in late summer, gently fade to silver in autumn above clumping mounds of slender, arching leaves with a central white stripe. Widely known as 'Chinese Silver Grass', its architectural form will last throughout the winter and looks wonderful highlighted by frosts.
Very versatile, it suits urban and courtyard spaces, plus coastal settings and informal gardens. Low maintenance, cut it down to the ground in late winter/early spring before new foliage shoots appear. It thrives in full sun in a reasonably fertile, free draining soil which retains some moisture, but its roots dislike being overly wet in the winter.
