Nepeta cyanea stands out in the genus for its unusually large flowers. From mid to late summer, tall, plump spikes carry deep purplish-blue blooms arranged in whorls around gently arching stems, rising above bushy clumps of mid-green, scented foliage. The slightly informal habit makes it a natural choice for more relaxed planting schemes — a gravel garden, a coastal border, or a naturalistic meadow-style planting — and its nectar-rich flowers are a reliable draw for bees and butterflies throughout the season.
Like many plants of Mediterranean origin, it thrives in free-draining soil in full sun and, once established, becomes genuinely drought-tolerant — a low-maintenance asset in a dry summer.
