Origanum 'Bristol Cross' is an aromatic sub-shrub ideally suited to alkaline, free-draining soil and full sun. It does extremely well in shallow soil over chalk — all too common in Hampshire — and is hardy down to -10°C, but only in well-drained conditions year-round. Wet soils can cause the roots to rot.

The flowers are particularly attractive: trailing purple-pink whorls held in red bracts, opening from late summer into autumn and drawing bees and other pollinators in abundance. For culinary use, the leaves have the best flavour before the flowers open and can be used fresh, dried, or frozen.

Equally at home in large terracotta pots, as border edging, trailing over raised beds, or in gravel, coastal, cottage, and courtyard gardens. An adaptable, drought-tolerant plant that adds scent and colour to the garden and flavour to the kitchen.
