Origanum laevigatum — commonly known as smooth oregano — is an ornamental herb that deserves to be far better known. The tiny, fragrant evergreen leaves cloak woody stems that from midsummer onwards carry clusters of tiny pink flowers on dark, willowy stems, attracting bees, hoverflies and butterflies in their droves. The flowers are followed by attractive seedheads that persist well into winter.
Mediterranean in origin, it thrives in poor, well-drained soil in full sun, though it will tolerate partial shade with a modest reduction in flowering. Perfect for a gravel or wildlife garden, it also works beautifully in a sunny container. Easy to grow — a quick trim in spring or autumn will keep its slightly informal habit looking its best.
