Slender stems bearing green buds rise in early summer, bursting open to reveal blousy, ruffled flowers in a rich dusky purple, each petal marked with a dark blotch at its base. The blooms soften and fade gracefully as they mature. Below, hairy, finely divided leaves form a handsome clump — though this foliage typically dies back after flowering and re-emerges in early autumn.
A classic Oriental Poppy for flower beds and borders, ‘Patty’s Plum’ may need some support in exposed positions. It thrives in a sheltered, sunny spot in any reasonably fertile soil. This cultivar was discovered in 1990 at the nursery of Patricia Marrow.
