This Chinese herbaceous perennial forms a statuesque display of heavily branched flower heads above a basal rosette of lobed or divided leaves. From July to September, large sprays of small yellow flowers are produced in clusters that later become attractive seedheads.
Best in any moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, it is a magnet for butterflies when in flower. Ideal for informal, cottage, and wildlife gardens as well as beds and borders — plant it towards the back where it partners beautifully with Agastache, tall Salvia, Leucanthemum, Echinops, Verbascum, delphiniums, and tall grasses such as Calamagrostis. Cut back old stems in spring to keep the plant tidy.
