‘Andenken an Friedrich Hahn’ is one of the oldest Penstemon hybrids, bred in 1918 and previously known as ‘Garnet’. Throughout summer it produces rich dark red, trumpet-shaped flowers with a distinctive white-striped throat, carried on bushy stems of narrow green foliage.
A magnet for pollinators, it benefits from regular deadheading to prolong flowering. Leave the top growth in place over winter to protect the crown, then cut back hard in spring once the last frosts have passed. It grows well in any fertile, moisture-retentive, free-draining soil, in sun or partial shade.
Rated H5, it is hardy in most places throughout the UK, even in severe winters (-15 to -10°C).
