Penstemon ‘Newbury Gem’ bears scarlet-red, bell-shaped flowers with white throats streaked with red throughout summer. Lance-shaped, glossy green leaves cover the upright stems of this bushy, semi-evergreen perennial.
Its prolonged flowering season makes it a useful choice for smaller gardens, cottage borders and courtyard planting. It grows well in sun or dappled shade in reasonably fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage.
Hardiness: H4 (−10°C to −5°C). Hardy through most UK winters. Provide winter protection in colder inland, upland or northern gardens; plants in pots are more vulnerable to frost.
