Penstemon 'Schoenholzeri', otherwise known as Penstemon 'Firebird', is a clump-forming semi-evergreen perennial. Narrow, lance-shaped green foliage covers the stems beneath wonderful racemes of crimson-red tubular flowers which appear throughout summer.
Keep deadheading as the flowers fade to encourage more blooms. Do not be tempted to cut this perennial down before winter — leave the top growth to protect it. In spring, after the last frosts have passed, cut the plant back hard. Happy in any fertile, moisture-retentive, free-draining soil, in sun or partial shade.
