Native to the Balkans and southern Europe, Petrorhagia illyrica is a pretty, sun-loving perennial with short, grass-like foliage topped with masses of baby-pink, star-like five-petalled flowers from early summer to autumn. When the first flush of flowers is over, cut the plant back to around 10cm and it will flower again.
Best in moist but free-draining soil, over a couple of years it develops into a soft, pillow-like mound. Its slightly fluffy appearance and diminutive height make it ideal for sunny border edges, containers and rockeries, and it can also be used to soften the edges of paving. Loved by bees and other pollinators, this easy-going and reliable little plant should be seen far more often.
