Commonly known as Turkish sage, Phlomis russeliana is a handsome deciduous perennial with stout stems bearing whorls of two-lipped yellow flowers in summer, set above broad, ovate, silvery-green leaves.
It thrives in full sun in well-drained soil and is an excellent choice for south-facing borders, coastal gardens and gravel gardens. Planted en masse it makes effective ground cover. The spent flower stems provide valuable winter structure and look particularly striking when rimed with frost. Divide in spring to maintain vigour.
