Named after the legendary plantswoman Ellen Willmott — of Eryngium giganteum ‘Miss Willmott’s Ghost’ fame — this delightful Potentilla produces masses of neat buds that open to reveal raspberry-pink flowers with wine-red centres, carried in loose clusters over mounds of mid-green foliage.
Hardier and tougher than its delicate looks suggest, it flowers from midsummer into early autumn, gently clumping and sprawling to fill gaps and suppress weeds. Easy to grow and versatile, it thrives in poor to fairly fertile, well-drained soil in full sun — a very pretty addition to a gravel garden or a sunny terrace planter, and a reliable favourite with bees.
