This British native can be found growing in or near ditches, streams, ponds and boggy areas. It is a rhizomatous, woody based perennial with lax upright stems and grey/green leaves with five or seven leaflets. The flowers appear from May to July and are arranged in clusters with deep red/ burgundy sepals.
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, hover flies and other beneficial insects, this is a great addition to bog, pond side, marginal and wildlife gardens but will also happily fit into cottage and informal gardens that can guarantee continuously wet conditions.
