Commonly known as Scarlet Cinquefoil, 'Monarch's Velvet' produces velvety, deep crimson saucer-shaped flowers with dark centres that lighten to scarlet-red as summer progresses. They contrast beautifully with the bright green, strawberry-like palmate leaves of this clump-forming perennial.
It thrives in any good, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, and looks particularly striking combined with oranges, yellows, and other hot colours. Cut back once flowering is over and divide large clumps in spring.
