Striking and statuesque, P. pulverulenta creates an amazing display from late spring into midsummer. Carrying layers of deep reddish-purple flowers arranged in whorls at intervals along the stem rather like a candelabra, Its upright sturdy stems erupt from basal rosettes of lush mid-green foliage.
Hailing from Sichuan in China, where it is found alongside creaks and streams, this hardy perennial likes a fertile, moist soil but dislikes its crown being covered with water. It would look stunning planted in drifts through a partially shaded, moist meadow where it will happily self-seed and gently wander through the years. Alternatively combine it with Hosta, Aruncus and Sanguisorba menziesii for an interesting and colourful combination of textures in your bog garden.
